The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
